ABOUT US | MISSION

The Sonny Parker Youth Foundation (SPYF) philosophy is founded on the belief, "As a man thinketh, so is he". Many youth labeled "high risk", suffer a disadvantage of notknowing themselves, or what to do with their lives. When they are faced with various issues such as drug use, gang involvement or teen pregnancy, some may yield to peer pressure. Our Foundation believes that by building self-esteem, we can increase their decision-making skills and lessen the negative effects of peer pressure.

Self-esteem has several definitions. According to Webster's Dictionary; "Self-esteem is a confidence and satisfaction in oneself". The California State Task Force defines self-esteem as; "appreciating my own worth and importance, and having the character to be accountable for myself and to act responsibly toward others". This is measured by the way we act. Self-esteem can also be defined as your internal belief system. The SPYF believe that self-esteem is made up of learned feelings and positive thoughts that reflect a positive attitude of, "I CAN DO IT".

Our goal is to instill "Can Do Attitudes", in these young people through the implementation of programs that allow development of academic survival skills, decision-making skills, and athletic skills. We believe that these skills are a valuable tool that will help them avoid negative peer pressures that may lead to drug use, gang involvement, and teen pregnancy. We want them to learn to take control of their lives and become active participants in "Building a Brighter Tomorrow....Today".
